Biography

Alysha Butler has been an educator for over 16 years. Throughout her career, she has taught classes in United States History, World History, Advanced Placement United States History, African American Studies, Latino Studies, and Global Studies in a number of diverse communities and settings in South Florida and in the Washington, DC. She graduated from Florida Atlantic University with an MA in history with a specialization in Reconstruction and the rise of feminism within the African American community. She also graduated from the same university with a BA in history and social science. She initially entered education as a means to help marginalized groups explore and utilize history to help gain a better sense of self and inspire them to reach for excellence. Since being employed by District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), she has held numerous leadership positions, such as social studies department chair and teacher lead. When she is not at school, she is most like enjoying the outdoors or a museum with her husband and son.
