Horace Pippin

A Painter of the African-American Experience

Horace Pippin was one of the first African-American artists to achieve great respect for his paintings of many different subjects in the first half of the twentieth century. Almost completely self-taught, Pippin combined his own experiences of war and political injustice with themes from the Bible and history in his art. He is esteemed today for his use of detail and color in capturing the African-American experience during this period.
